A Tourist in Your Own City: Burgh Tours to Explore

Written by Elisabeth Kay

Whether you’re new to the city, just stopping by, or born and raised, new experiences in Pittsburgh await you. Sometimes, it takes a little bit more than self-guided exploration to find your new go-to spot, or impress someone with your knowledge of Pittsburgh history. Luckily, Walk the Burgh tours offer a wide variety of different ways to explore the Golden Triangle!

With so much to see downtown, you’re almost certain to miss something at first glance– thankfully, the Best of the Burgh Tour showcases larger historical landmarks, buildings, and art pieces, while also pointing out some smaller or hidden gems that might not have been on your radar before. Given by a Pittsburgh local, this tour is one surefire way to make the most of your time spent in downtown Pittsburgh, no matter the duration. This tour will only take up two hours of your time, leaving you ample time to explore your new findings afterwards. For just $29, you can broaden your Pittsburgh knowledge on any day of the week!

But tours for more niche experiences are also offered. Have you ever left downtown feeling… haunted? You might figure out what spirits could be sticking with you on the Black & Ghost Tour! Offered every day of the week, this tour gives you the chance to grow your knowledge not just on basic Pittsburgh history but also some fun facts that may haunt you forever. You won’t be bringing any unwanted spirits with you, though– this tour is fully outside, with the buildings lit up for later and chillier days. A $29 ticket will get you 2 hours of an eerily good time.

Looking for more of an acquired taste? The Beers in the Burgh Tour will allow you to expand your palate while making friends in Lawrenceville, one of Pittsburgh’s buzzing neighborhoods! If your Thursdays or Saturdays are feeling a little empty, a $59 experience is just one click away. Not only will your taste buds be met with unique flavors of the many craft beers offered, you will get to meet the creators of them. Along with this, you’ll mingle with fellow beer enjoyers while perusing around Lawrenceville, taking note of the historic landmarks that make the neighborhood one of Pittsburgh’s most unique!

If a taste of history is just what you’re looking for, the Whiskey Rebellion & Prohibition Tour is just for you! Starting and ending with two handcrafted cocktails, this tour showcases the Whiskey Rebellion that took place in the late sixteenth century, as well as many prohibition landmarks; some of the city’s hidden speakeasies are still active today! This $39 tour will make your weekends better, being given on Saturday and Sunday afternoons–  but make sure to secure your tickets, as they sell out fast!

Even if your home team isn’t from Pittsburgh, there’s no way you’ve been able to avoid the black and gold– so embrace it on the Black & Gold Sports History Tour! From Pierogi Races to Terrible Towels, this tour of the City of Champions is sure to make you walk away a Pittsburgh sports fan, even if it’s just because of the rich history and sports culture the city has to offer. This tour is an hour and a half of fun, tradition, and fan loyalty for $29 on Saturdays and Sundays. Show some pride for your favorite Pittsburgh team while walking around the city’s landmarks!

Walk the Burgh makes it nearly impossible to feel lost in your own city, and offers an expansive variety of general and nicher interest tours. They’re adding new tours often– make sure to keep an eye out for new ones as the summer progresses and even moving ahead into the fall. If you want to impress a visitor, or just learn more about your favorite city for yourself, these tours have you covered.
