Beto's Tacos: A Flavorful Journey to Authentic Mexican Food

Written by Nick Razum

A great place to go for Mexican food downtown is Beto’s Tacos. Tucked away in the corner of Market Square, Beto’s Tacos is a hidden treat of the most satisfying tacos and burritos that fast food simply cannot compare.

Gricelda Martinez and her kitchen staff start cooking in the morning hours before opening. The tortillas are made by hand, the vegetables are bought fresh, and the meat is cooked on order. The fresh smells of the ingredients will set your appetite into overdrive.

“It’s a good lunch,” said Martinez, “and it’s not too expensive!” She tastes everything being cooked to make sure the highest quality meal is always provided. Beto’s Tacos is a reliable spot when tacos are craved.

This is Martinez’s second taco shop after her previous store closed during the pandemic. Beto’s Tacos opened in August to provide the best Mexican food Pittsburgh has to offer. Beto is Gricelda’s husband’s name, but this is her restaurant. Her husband runs the other restaurant on Liberty. Gricelda started working in food service 12 years ago with her husband as a waitress and bartender. When they opened their previous restaurant, she started working in the kitchen. Now, she runs Beto’s Tacos while her husband runs the other.

Gricelda’s favorite is the steak taco. She is picky with food, so her favorite must hold up to the highest standards. Customers love the quesabirria, three corn tortillas stuffed with chihuahua cheese and slow-cooked lamb. Any Pittsburgh native will go crazy for the 412 Burrito, a flour tortilla with rice, refried beans, pico de gallo, home fries and a choice of meat.

Authentic Mexican food can’t be quickly recreated without losing the heart of what makes the meal taste good. Beto’s Tacos has the true taste of Mexican food that originates from the heart and soul of Mexican food.
