Celebrate Black History Month with Nia Sioux

Written by Allison Bridgwater

Want to celebrate Black History Month this February with a talented and famous young woman named Nia Sioux?

Attend the August Wilson African American Cultural Center (AWAACC) Truthsayers: Nia Sioux event, part of the Truthsayers Speaker Series, on February 27th at 7:00 p.m. for $35 to hear New York Times best-selling author Nia Sioux talk about her life. You can even have a chance to meet her during her book signing.

Nia Sioux’s 2025 memoir, Bottom of the Pyramid, recounts the tale of her resilient journey on Dance Moms, which began at age 9, as she performed in front of millions on TV. Her 2021 children’s book Today I Dance, in which she encourages inclusion and having fun with dancing, is also a huge hit.

As a native Pittsburgher, she first gained attention on the reality show, Dance Moms, appearing as a regular member for most of the 8 seasons. Being one of the only African American girls on the series, she often felt isolated, and also had to constantly face challenges like being rated at the bottom of her dance team, mental health issues, and criticisms, all of which she has overcome.

Though through it all she continues to inspire kids to take their lives into their own hands and be confident in themselves. As a UCLA graduate, performer, author, singer, actress, entrepreneur, and social justice advocate, Nia Siox has done it all. She has worked with many brands, including Book of the Month, ABC/Disney, and the 2018 Winter Olympics.

In her spare time, Nia Sioux raises awareness of reflex neurovascular dystrophy (RND), a condition she’s been diagnosed with. While attending UCLA, she belonged to an all-Black sorority called Alpha Kappa Alpha Inc. Her other passions include promoting body positivity, anti-bullying, and animal rights.
