Did You Know That DNA Is An RCO?
Written by Amanda Buchman
A Registered Community Organization (RCO) is a non-profit that works to improve the quality of life in the neighborhoods it represents. In Downtown Pittsburgh, there are only two RCOs: Downtown Neighbors Alliance (DNA) and Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership (PDP). It is DNA’s duty to promote the interests of downtown residents and small businesses as the city continues to develop.
Our organization’s staff acknowledges the immense responsibility that comes with this role. “We are honored and humbled to be recognized as an RCO," says John Valentine, DNA’s Executive Director. “Our commitment is to make sure we look out for the interests of the parties we represent.”

Much of an RCO’s duties fall under the broad category of urban planning. A crucial part of this is attending Development Activities Meetings (DAMs) to discuss projects before they enter the city planning phase.
By participating in these meetings, DNA has been able to accomplish a great deal for Pittsburgh residents, including the establishment of the first downtown dog park and Well Well Market, a brand new grocery store. Detailed information about our projects can be found on our website.
As a whole, urban planning typically involves working with the government in regards to growth and safety. This can also include economic development, advocacy, and putting on events. DNA works hard to create a lively downtown atmosphere through community programming, which all residents are encouraged to attend.
