Potential Renovations Would Give DNA’s Downtown Dog Park Eco-Friendly Updates

Written by Amanda Buchman

The Downtown Neighbors Alliance (DNA) is raising funds to upgrade the Downtown Dog Park at the base of the Rachel Carson Bridge on 9th St. and Fort Duquesne Blvd. Established in 2017, the public park has had many visitors, but a few updates would beautify the space and make it more eco-friendly.

After so much wear and tear, the ground is looking patchy and uneven. To solve this problem, DNA is researching sustainable ground alternatives such as soy-based turf and clover lawns. These would require significantly less water and maintenance than grass, and would provide a long-lasting layer of greenery for dogs to enjoy.

Additionally, DNA wants to replace the current water source: a dingy tin can attached to the fence. Your pets deserve clean water, which could be made possible by a stainless steel fountain. If this system is implemented, both humans and dogs will have access to a clean water source with low carbon emissions.

Other issues DNA hopes to address are the lack of signage, lighting, and recycling bins. Team members envision a large sign labeling the park illuminated by solar lights. As Downtown Pittsburgh’s sole dog park, it is crucial that residents know they have access to it.

The research the organization has conducted lays out a clear plan for potential renovations. The sustainable initiative aims to support the downtown community and contribute to a greener future for our growing city.

The next phase of this project is fundraising! If DNA secures enough funding, construction could begin as early as 2026. For more information on the beloved Downtown Dog Park, follow the group on Facebook!
