North Side to Transform with Esplanade Breaking Ground

Written by Elisabeth Kay

Pittsburgh’s riverfront is about to have a whole new look as the ‘Esplanade’ was given the okay to break ground. This $740 million project would absolutely transform the bank of the Ohio river, and revitalize the area and Pittsburgh as a whole.

This project has been in the works since 2017 and includes a Ferris Wheel, apartment building, shops and restaurants. The apartment complex will include a mix of high-end and affordable apartment units, making the new area inclusive. The area will be extremely accessible to pedestrians, residents, and tourists, as it will include sidewalks, bike lanes, and slow traffic.

The first phase of development, planned by Piatt Companies, includes an outdoor plaza, apartment complex, restaurant and retail complex, and parking garage. This will transform the area that currently stands with old industrial buildings.

$25 million in grants has been acquired to get the ball rolling on this major Pittsburgh development. While each building will be up for individual review and approval, the first phase is hoped to be done by 2028. Developments like this are key to revitalizing the city, and the Downtown Neighbors Alliance is incredibly excited to see this transformation!
