Self Driving Cars to Take Pittsburgh Streets

Written by Elisabeth Kay

Pittsburgh is constantly looking– and driving– toward the future, and one way of doing that is introducing Waymo to the city. Waymo, which was founded in 2009 under a different name, has been introduced in multiple cities, and Pittsburgh is the next on its list. The self-driving car service is excited to explore the Steel City.

“Yinz ready to ride?” asked the Waymo team when they announced that they were beginning to manually drive the cars around the city to get them acquainted and safe for riders. Residents will be able to book Waymos similarly to any other taxi and rideshare service.

Waymo not only ensures safe travel between destinations, but also makes exploring the city more accessible for those who have disabilities or other accessibility concerns. It will help people explore the city and new opportunities, which will in turn allow for the community to flourish. Along with this, Waymo aims to bring down the rate of car accidents in the cities it’s available in.

Self-driving cars aren’t new to Pittsburgh, with technological advancements in the field happening in and around the city for years. However, this new opportunity will transform Pittsburgh’s transportation and community scene. We’re so excited to see where Waymo takes the city– and you– next!
