Healthy Living, One Step at a Time

Written by Elisabeth Kay

The Downtown Neighbors Alliance (DNA) has been researching Pittsburgh health statistics in our aim to make Downtown Pittsburgh a thriving place to live. One of the ways we’re doing this is by implementing a Downtown Pittsburgh Walking Club, which will start on Saturday, October 25th at 10 AM.

Walking is proven to decrease the risk of heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. 10% of adults in Allegheny county have diabetes, and in 2022, a reported 32% of Pittsburgh residents were obese. Additionally, heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in Pittsburgh. We intend to keep this walking club going to promote healthy living among downtown Pittsburgh residents as we keep these community statistics in mind. Walking is also a proactive way to lessen anxiety and depression, which 39.8% of Pittsburgh adults suffer from.

Community is also an essential part to living a healthy life, and we recognize that. Through this walking tour, you’ll get an opportunity to engage with your community and make new friends in your local area. In this era of technology, nothing beats in-person connections, so bring a friend and meet a new one as you walk the streets of downtown!

Our Living Well Initiative, which kicked off over the summer, is a way to bring healthy lifestyles to downtown Pittsburgh. We’re excited to continue our walking club along with other events to ensure Pittsburgh residents continue to thrive and live a long, healthy life. Our first walk will take place on Saturday, October 25th, starting at 10 A.M. at Mellon Square Park and ending at Mellon Square Coffee.

RSVP for the walking club event here, and keep up with The Downtowner for more information and fun! During our walking club, we will be doing a fun scavenger hunt, and a giveaway! Three participants will be randomly selected to win a ticket to our upcoming event, Candlelight Crescendo, on November 1st! You don’t want to miss this opportunity for healthy living and a free night of music!
