The Culture of Laughs: A Glimpse into Arcade Comedy’s World
Written by Grace Regan
In the heart of The Cultural District, in an intimate space of 75 seats, a sacred language is spoken: comedy. Not everyone may understand it, you might wish you could speak it. This summer is your chance to learn.
Arcade Comedy Theater has a robust rotation of shows and comedians ready to see some smiles and emit a chorus of laughter.
Kicking off the summer is Duo Two Ways. Performing on May 30th at 7 pm, Fred Brown and Scott Pettis give Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde a new meaning with their performance of two very different improv styles. The first style, known as TJ & Dave, is described as “patient, theatrical, and naturalistic.” The second style, dubbed “Zumpf,” is a fast, bold, moving improv style that will keep the audience on their toes and smiles on their faces. With their varying styles, Duo Two Ways is guaranteed to entertain.
There’s even something for the kids. Beta Stage, showcasing on May 31st at 6 pm, is a family-friendly improv troupe performance taking children to magical places with an enchanting drag show, including puppets, comedy, and a drag queen storytime.
To see some experts, Well-Known Strangers, a lively improv group, performing May 31st at 8 pm, take suggestions from their live audience to create one-of-a-kind characters and stories, promising bellowing laughs.
For a chance to perform and debut your improv groups, sketch teams, or even a stand-up set, this open mic show will curate the unexpected. Your ACT with Nonsense, June 1st at 7:30 pm, is the perfect opportunity for up-and-coming comedians to try something new, and for the audience to witness some experimental comedy.
Want to see jokes tested and trialed? The Stand-Up Laboratory, June 5th at 9 pm, is where jokes are lab-tested and come alive. The lab presents a class of feature comics and hand-selected comics from online submissions. A night assured of the freshest sets and rising stars in comedy.
Everyone could use a laugh; in fact, it greatly benefits us mentally, socially, and physically. Have a dose of laughter and stop by Arcade Comedy Theater for an array of amusement.
