The Benedum Trees Gallery is housed in the historic Benedum Trees Building, which can be found on Fourth Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh. This building held the work of two names that should be familiar to any resident of Pittsburgh, Mike Benedum and Joe Trees. These two wildcats worked together to expand the oil business and bought this building off of “Oline” Jones Machesney in 1913, making it one of Fourth Avenues most historic and iconic buildings to date. Go Fourth Pittsburgh allows you to explore this building’s rich history along with others along Fourth Avenue through their interactive website.

May 18th, 2025 was the Pittsburgh Renaissance’s Semisesquicentennial, which is celebrated through this Glen Davis exhibit. Davis sat in his office on the fourteenth floor of the Benedum Trees Building 75 years ago, watching the Pittsburgh destruction and Renaissance before his own eyes. Through his photography, his sculptures, and his paintings, you’re given the chance to see the abstract art movement that was fostered in downtown Pittsburgh 75 years ago. This movement inspired some of the landmarks downtown Pittsburgh is known for, such as Point State Park and the Gateway Center.

This exhibit had its grand opening on May 17th, 2025, and will keep its doors open until August of 2025. You can visit this exhibit on Thursdays and Fridays from 4-7 PM, and Saturdays from 10-4 PM. Art Collector and Co-Curator Patrick McArdle, Architect Rob Pfaffman, Mark Hauser and Erin O’Neill worked diligently to put this exhibit together, and can’t wait for it to reach greater audiences. For more information on the exhibition, head to the Benedum Trees Gallery website or reach out to Co-Curator Erin O’Neill at 412.512.3125. Pittsburgh’s history can be found all around you, and this exhibit is such an exciting opportunity to explore it further!
