Best Dish: Balvanera — A Taste of Buenos Aires in the Strip District
Written by Kiki Yan
Balvanera brings the energy of Buenos Aires to Pittsburgh’s Strip District with a menu rooted in Argentine tradition and shaped by global technique. Opened in NYC in 2014 and arriving in Pittsburgh in 2023, the restaurant is led by acclaimed Argentine chef Fernando Navas and Pittsburgh native Meredith Boyle.
Named after a historic Buenos Aires neighborhood where artists and creatives once gathered, Balvanera embraces a warm, social dining culture. The space features high ceilings, modern yet comfortable design, and attentive, knowledgeable servers who make the experience feel both polished and welcoming.
Empanadas de Humita
A perfect introduction to Balvanera’s philosophy, these empanadas are filled with sweet corn, roasted red pepper, melted provolone, and a hint of aji amarillo. They’re comforting yet refined — the kind of dish that feels rooted in tradition while still surprising.
Arancini de Coliflor
These cauliflower and rice croquettes offer a clever twist on a classic, crispy on the outside and tender within. Paired with a quince purée, they balance savory depth with a subtle sweetness that keeps each bite interesting.
Pez Limón Crudo
Delicate yellowtail sashimi is elevated with guindilla pepper, shallots, and silky Arauco olive oil. Clean, bright, and beautifully composed, this dish showcases Balvanera’s lighter, more modern side.
Lubina
The striped bass is expertly cooked and paired with confit potatoes, fennel, and saffron aioli. It’s elegant without being heavy — a thoughtful composition that highlights technique and restraint.
Lomo – Pampas Argentinas
The centerpiece for meat lovers, this 9 oz. certified Angus, pasture-raised filet mignon reflects Argentina’s deep connection to beef. Simply prepared and cooked with precision, it lets quality take center stage — rich, tender, and unforgettable.
At its heart, Balvanera is about connection — to culture, to community, and to the shared joy of gathering around a table. From its bustling dining room to its soulful menu, it brings the spirit of Buenos Aires to Pittsburgh in a way that feels both authentic and welcoming.
