Nippon Steel Expands Its Pittsburgh Presence
Nippon Steel Corp. is continuing to grow its footprint in the Pittsburgh region following its $14.1 billion acquisition of U.S. Steel earlier this year.
The Tokyo-based company has opened a new strategic branch of Nippon Steel Trading Americas Inc. on the 48th floor of 600 Grant Street, the headquarters of U.S. Steel. The new office, which launched in December, currently employs five people and is led by an executive vice president of the company.
This strategic branch complements Nippon Steel Trading Americas’ existing U.S. operations, which are headquartered in Chicago with additional offices across the country, including in Texas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois, Ohio, and Mexico. The trading arm handles a wide range of steel and metal products, from flat-rolled steel and tin plate to bars, rods, electrodes, and titanium.
According to Nippon Steel, the Pittsburgh expansion will allow for closer coordination and faster information-sharing with Nippon Steel North America Inc., which relocated its North American headquarters to Pittsburgh earlier this year.
The move is part of Nippon Steel’s broader commitment to the region following its acquisition of U.S. Steel, including a $14 billion investment through 2028. Planned investments include at least $1 billion for a new hot strip mill at Edgar Thomson Works in Braddock and North Braddock.
Nippon Steel now employs approximately 50 people in the Pittsburgh region, including its North America President and CEO, Hiroshi Ono.
