Birding in Point State Park

Written by Allison Bridgwater

Want to see all the beautiful and special birds that trek across Pittsburgh’s Allegheny River? On January 21st, from 4:00 p.m. through 5:30 p.m., you can join two specialists at Point State Park to learn more about birds. Plus, it’s a free outdoor event.

So, spread the word and reserve your spot today with the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR). Since Point State Park is between three rivers in a busy city, many wildlife species must appreciate the preservation of the area. So, just remember to be mindful of the birds and the nature around you.

To join DCNR Environmental Education Specialist Jack Lachendro and Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy Naturalist Educator Stephen Bucklin, meet at the entrance of Fort Pitt Museum, and absorb as they guide you through an informational lesson on bird watching.

Although Pittsburgh’s winter brings a cold and icy atmosphere, birds seem to enjoy it, often roosting in the river, and people seem to enjoy observing them.

Some birds you may see are gulls, waterfowl, or songbirds, but there will be many species of birds traveling around the park. Even crows may be seen in their natural habitat eyeing us back; how mysterious!

Whether you’re an expert on birding or completely new to the hobby, this event is open to everyone, and you might learn a thing or two about birds you never expected to know. When you take the time to stop and listen to what sounds and songs the birds make, or notice what specks of color decorate a bird’s feathers, a curious or peaceful feeling may arise in you.
