🎉 New Downtown Dining Alert: Sushi I Celebrates Grand Opening with Community Cheers for delicious sushi

Written by Zhenru Yan

Downtown Pittsburgh just got a whole lot tastier.

On Monday, May 5, Sushi I officially opened its doors at 245 Fourth Avenue, marking its arrival with a lively grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony. Community leaders, downtown advocates, and hungry sushi fans all turned out to welcome the city’s newest Japanese restaurant—and it’s clear this isn’t just a new place to grab dinner. It’s part of a growing vision for the future of Downtown.

Mayor Ed Gainey kicked off the celebration with a powerful speech focused on where Pittsburgh is headed next: “We want the next 20 years of downtown to be vibrant, inclusive, diverse, and welcoming—a place where businesses like Sushi I can thrive.” His message underscored a theme that resonated throughout the event: Downtown’s comeback is personal, and everyone has a role to play.

Joining the mayor were representatives from the Downtown Neighbors Alliance (DNA) and the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership (PDP), two nonprofit organizations working to support small businesses, foster community connection, and energize Pittsburgh’s core. Together, they helped cut the ceremonial red ribbon and welcomed Sushi I into the neighborhood as a partner in progress.

Inside, guests got a firsthand taste of what the buzz is about. From fresh-cut nigiri and specialty rolls to deep-fried bites and chef’s favorites, the menu is packed with flavorful options. Housed in the former Harris Grill location, Sushi I has transformed the space into a sleek, modern dining destination with big plans on the horizon, including rooftop entertainment.

Michelle Chen, a partner and investor in the restaurant, spoke on behalf of the Sushi I team. “This is a family-oriented restaurant,” she said. “We want our guests to have a great experience and enjoy a delicious meal with their loved ones.” Her enthusiasm matched the energy of the crowd and the restaurant’s mission to be more than just a place to eat—but a place to connect.

👉 Update: Sushi I is Now À La Carte!
Heads up, sushi lovers—Sushi I is no longer an all-you-can-eat spot. Michelle Chen explained that while the promotional launch was a hit, customer feedback inspired a shift to à la carte dining to offer a more personalized and elevated experience. With rooftop entertainment and expanded offerings in the works, she’s confident Sushi I is on track to becoming a downtown favorite.

So yes, the format has changed—but the flavor, hospitality, and heart behind Sushi I remain stronger than ever. Come for the sushi, stay for the vibes.
