Pittsburgh on the Silver Screen🎥

Written by Willow Shedlock

Pittsburgh holds a long and rich history in the American film industry. The first ever movie theater, the Nickelodeon, was opened on Smithfield Street Downtown. And since the city’s entrance into the industry, a large amount of movies and series have been filmed in our very own city. With the Pennsylvania Film Production Tax Credit, a 25-30% tax credit is given to productions spending at least 60% of their total budget in Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh residents benefit from the taxes of vendors and subcontractors, including hotels, restaurants, hospitality, construction, hair/makeup, etc. It also incentivizes local hiring. With our gorgeous skyline, filming allows for broadening the interest for tourism and shows our rapidly flourishing Downtown.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Amongst the numerous movies filmed in Pittsburgh is The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which had filming all across the suburbs in Pittsburgh. However, one of the most notorious shots of the film is shot in Fort Pitt Tunnel and on Fort Pitt Bridge, giving viewers an amazing scene of our Pittsburgh skyline.

The Dark Knight Rises

In The Dark Knight Rises, our Downtown streets became part of the infamous city of Gotham. Acrisure Stadium (Heinz Field) also made an appearance, as well as the Steelers, acting as the Gotham Rouge's football team.
