Written by Grace Regan
In the heart of downtown lies a new gem, with a rooftop and fresh nigiri, Sushi I is Pittsburgh’s newest catch.
Sushi I opened its doors on May 5th, located on 4th Avenue, inviting guests to a sleek, modern restaurant and rooftop, where the sushi is just as stylish.

Sushi I offers mouth-watering hand rolls, nigiri, hibachi, and hand-crafted cocktails, offering much more than your traditional sushi spot. Its variety spans from affordable lunch specials to happy hour eats and cocktails, making Sushi a delicious downtown hub.
During my stop at Sushi I, I sat down with the owner and investor, Michelle Chen, to discuss the restaurant space and Sushi I’s goals for downtown.
As more restaurants pop up in the downtown area, Sushi I invites guests to “not only enjoy high-quality sushi, but also to immerse themselves in a dining experience that is both meaningful and memorable. More than just a restaurant, Sushi I aspires to be a place that feels like home. We are dedicated to fostering a warm and inclusive environment where every individual feels welcomed and appreciated.”
And Sushi I delivered (not only my delicious sushi) but also a personable experience and wonderful knowledge about my dishes.

I was served a delectable black pearl roll which included spicy salmon and jalapeno wrapped inside, and topped with seared pepper tuna and avocado, topped with black truffle paste, but that’s not all. I also had to try the sweet potato roll, which is completely vegetarian; the options are truly endless.
The sushi was perfectly prepared and presented beautifully, making it a luxurious experience, with an affordable price tag. The flavors were well-balanced and punchy at the same time, creating the perfect wrap to my dining experience.
Without a doubt, downtown is the perfect spot for Sushi I with it’s vibrant sushi making an even more vibrant Pittsburgh, a goal for Michelle and the Sushi I team recognizes, “It is a place where individuals from all walks of life converge, and we recognized an opportunity to introduce something truly distinctive to the community. Downtown lacked a venue like Sushi I: a welcoming, high-quality sushi restaurant offering a relaxed and home-like atmosphere. Our vision was to become part of the city’s evolving culinary landscape and to contribute meaningfully to its rich cultural fabric by creating a space where people can come together, connect, and enjoy fresh, flavorful cuisine in an inviting and beautifully designed setting.”
Sushi I’s commitment extends “beyond culinary excellence to include attentive service, a warm atmosphere, and the creation of lasting memories. We want each visit to be remarkable—not only for the flavors, but for the overall experience.” The bond between downtown and Sushi I is the perfect synergized relationship, both full of hope, diversity, and the promise of a future that is revitalized and vibrant.
