If you're searching for one of the best seafood experiences in Pittsburgh, look no further than Penn Avenue Fish Co., located right in the heart of the Strip District. Known for its ultra-fresh ingredients, casual industrial atmosphere, and a menu that balances comfort with culinary craft, this spot has become a go-to for lunch meetings, after-work bites, and relaxed weekend meals.

I recently stopped by during their Oyster Happy Hour, which runs Wednesday through Saturday from 3–5 PM, and I was impressed by both the quality and the value. Their oysters, just $1 apiece, are impeccably fresh, briny, clean, and handled with care. Whether you’re an oyster enthusiast or new to the experience, it’s an excellent way to unwind after work.
One standout dish worth highlighting is the Penn Cove Poke Bowl ($19.99). It starts with a base of seasoned sushi rice, topped with tender cuts of salmon, avocado, macadamia nuts, seaweed salad, scallions, sesame seeds, and a house-made sambal sweet soy drizzle. The balance of textures and flavors is exceptional—creamy, crunchy, savory, and slightly spicy in all the right ways.
What elevates this bowl even further is the skill behind it. Just behind their sushi counter, you'll find professionally trained sushi chefs preparing dishes to order with precision and care. While I didn’t try the sushi this time, it’s clearly worth returning for. The attention to quality and technique is evident.

I also tried the Happy Jack Sandwich ($13.99), which deserves its mention. It's a well-constructed combination of hand-sliced smoked salmon, creamy coleslaw, spicy remoulade, and melted Jack cheese. Smoky, tangy, and satisfying, it's a great option for anyone who enjoys rich flavors in a casual, handheld form.
In short, Penn Avenue Fish Co. strikes a rare balance—it’s unfussy but high-quality, fast yet thoughtfully prepared. It’s the kind of place you can pop into for a quick bite or sit down for a more leisurely seafood experience, depending on the day.
Recommendation: Don’t miss the oyster happy hour, and if you’re looking for a fresh, filling, and well-executed dish, the Penn Cove Poke Bowl is an excellent choice. And next time, I’ll be trying the sushi.
