Black History Month Lecture

Written by Willow Shedlock

With February around the corner, the Heinz History Center is presenting its twelfth annual Black History Month Lecture. Their yearly lecture is taking place on Friday, January 30th, from 6:30-7:30pm, with general admission tickets costing only $10.

The event focuses on showcasing historians, scholars, academics, filmmakers, curators, and literary artists who have recently published new work, helping encourage the audience to engage directly with their creative practice.

This year's guest speaker is Deborah Willis, the author of “Reflections in Black: A History of Black Photographers 1840 to the Present” and a leading historian of photography. Willis is a professor and chair of the Department of Photography & Imaging at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, while also directing NYU’s Center for Black Visual Culture/Institute for African American Affairs. With Willis’ deep connection to Pittsburgh's photographic legacy, her program will center on discussing the photographers and artists whose work reshaped how Black life has been seen.

This event is the perfect opportunity for education, culture, and comradery! It’s not an event to miss!
